A Finite Element Method for First-Order Hyperbolic Systems

A new finite element method is proposed for the numerical solution of a class of initial-boundary value problems for first-order hyperbolic systems in one space dimension. An application of our procedure to a system modeling gas flow in a pipe is discussed. Asymptotic error estimates are derived in the L norm in space.

Finite Volume Element Method for Second Order Hyperbolic Equations

We discuss a priori error estimates for a semidiscrete piecewise linear finite volume element (FVE) approximation to a second order wave equation in a two-dimensional convex polygonal domain. Since the domain is convex polygonal, a special attention has been paid to the limited regularity of the exact solution. Optimal error estimates in L2, H1 norms and quasioptimal estimates in L∞ norm are di...

Invariant Domains and First-Order Continuous Finite Element Approximation for Hyperbolic Systems

We propose a numerical method to solve general hyperbolic systems in any space dimension using forward Euler time stepping and continuous finite elements on non-uniform grids. The properties of the method are based on the introduction of an artificial dissipation that is defined so that any convex invariant sets containing the initial data is an invariant domain for the method. The invariant do...

Discontinuous Hamiltonian Finite Element Method for Linear Hyperbolic Systems

We develop a Hamiltonian discontinuous finite element discretization of a generalized Hamiltonian system for linear hyperbolic systems, which include the rotating shallow water equations, the acoustic and Maxwell equations. These equations have a Hamiltonian structure with a bilinear Poisson bracket, and as a consequence the phase-space structure, “mass” and energy are preserved. We discretize ...

Least-squares Finite Element Methods for First-order Elliptic Systems

Least-squares principles use artificial " energy " functionals to provide a Rayleigh-Ritz-like setting for the finite element method. These function-als are defined in terms of PDE's residuals and are not unique. We show that viable methods result from reconciliation of a mathematical setting dictated by the norm-equivalence of least-squares functionals with practicality constraints dictated by...
